TED ALEX AWARD INFORMATION
Lewis Mills High School and all of the member schools in the Berkshire League place a special emphasis on sportsmanship each season. In every Berkshire League sport at, players are asked to provide feedback on each of their Berkshire League opponents using the feedback form found below. The results of this form are recorded on the Ted Alex Ballot and then given to the Chairperson of the Specific Berkshire League sport at their year end meeting. These forms, along with the specific the schools Berkshire League team performances are mathematically tabulated to select an annual Ted Alex Award Winner. This award is presented to the school with the best all-around program balancing sportsmanship in their various sports and athletic achievment. Lewis Mills has been fortunate to win the Ted Alex Award for the 2008-2009 and the 2006-2007 School Years.
Team Sportsmanship Feedback
Webster’s defines sportsmanship as “the qualities displayed by one who abides by the rules of a contest and accepts victory or defeat graciously”. At Mills, sportsmanship means that and more. It speaks to the character of the players and how they represent themselves, their team, and their school on and off the playing field.
The Berkshire League coaches and officials elect team sportsmanship award winners based on the criteria shown in the chart below. It has been reproduced here to help you as you discuss positive and negative examples of sportsmanship from your season.
Berkshire League Sportsmanship Continuum
1- Excellent: Seeks to shake opponents hands; Uses positive comments; Accepts
referees decisions; Helps oppponents to his/her feet; Applauds good play; Encourages
sportsmanslike conduct; Calms angry teammates
2-Good: Shakes hands as part of protocol; Uses positive comments most times; Accepts referees decisions most times; Claps when an opponent is hurt; Applauds good play sometimes; Encourages sportsmanslike conduct
3- Average: Shakes opponents hand when asked to; Once in a while makes a poor comment;Questions a few officials decisions; Isolated poor sportsmanship
4- Needs Improvement: Walks away when asked to shake hands; Some trash talking; Makes some poor comments; Minor physical confrontations; Makes many poor comments to official; Uses profanity occasionally
5- Poor Sportsmanship: Refuses to shake hands; Trash talks; Yells at referees; Disrespectful comments; Booing/Heckling official; Taunts opponents; Uses profanity; Throws objects; Is carded or talked to by official
