2/15 @ Housatonic
Lewis Mills 52, Housatonic 31
Lewis Mills won it's first Berkshire League girls basketball championship in
over a decade with a convincing 52-31 victory at third-place Housatonic. With
the win, Mills (19-1) set a new program record for regular season wins.
"This is a special group of players, " Mills coach Dennis Fowler said.
"They played outstanding team basketball tonight... Just like they have
all season."
Once again, it was defense that fueled Mills' victory. Led by senior Sami Pelletier's
suffocating defensive effort on the BL's top scorer Paxton Thornton, Mills was
able to hold Housatonic to only 16 points in the first three quarters. Thornton
was held to just 6 points, 13 below her average.
"This team has proven the cliche to be correct - defense wins championships,"
Fowler said.
Mills was led on offense by Rachel Considine's 13 points, while Katie VanGilst
chipped in with 11 and Aubrey Hoyt with 10.
Housatonic (14-5) was lead by Thornton's 6 points. Sarah Godbout and Kayla Robinson
also had 6 a piece.
"They deserve to be champions," Fowler said after his team's 17 straight
win. "They are the toughest, hardest working group of players to come through
this school in a long time."

efforts of the year, winning in Thomaston 45-31.
The Spartan's 14th-straight win was all about defense, limiting the Golden Bears

did that very well."

1/21 @ Shepaug
Lewis Mills 34, Shepaug 30
The Lewis Mills girls basketball team's 10th-straight win may be its biggest
of the season
The Spartans from Burlington defeated Shepaug 34-30 Monday afternoon in a thrilling
Berkshire League showdown in Washington Depot. Most importantly, Mills handed
Shepaug its first loss of the season after trailing by as much as 11 points
in the first half. With the win, Lewis Mills (12-1) moves into a a tie with
Shepaug in the loss column (13-1).
"We were down 15-4 early and I never thought we were out of it" Mills
coach Dennis Fowler said. "Our six seniors have been through so much together.
Today, they never once gave up or put their heads down. They just kept working
and it paid off down the stretch."
Lewis Mills trailed 30-29 with under a minute left when senior Sami Pelletier
(8 points) nailed a 17-foot jumper to give the Burlington Spartans a one-point
lead. After a timeout, Shepaug's Melissa Randall was fouled. She missed both
free throws and Mills got the rebound. Shepaug, with only three team fouls,
was forced to instantly foul.
By the time Pelletier went to the line, there were 18 seconds left in the game.
Pelletier missed the front end of a one-and-one. Shepaug rebounded and pushed
the ball to a wide open Stephanie Moots (9 points). But Moots, feeling the hard-coming
pressure from senior Stef Schur, missed the left-handed layup.
Another Mills senior - Jackie Hernandez - swooped in for the rebound and played
the role of hero with 7 second left. Hernandez was instantly fouled and made
the front end of the one and-one to give Mills a 32-30 lead. Hernandez missed
the second, but followed her shot and hit a layup with 3 seconds left to ice
the game. "Jackie really made some huge plays to help us secure the win,"
Fowler said. "But, really all six seniors did something positive to help
us comeback."
Lewis Mills' guards Schur and senior Alexis Veith led a frantic full-court pressure
defense that held Shepaug to 7 total second half points. Seniors Rachel Considine
and Aubrey Hoyt combined to limit the BL's most dominant player, Samantha Steinmetz
(9 points), to one second half point. "Our defensive effort in the second
half was amazing," Fowler said. "To hold a great team like Shepaug
to seven points in the second half tells you the type of heart these seniors
played with. They deserved to win."

Varsity: Lewis Mills 51, Wamogo 32
LITCHFIELD - The Lewis Mills girls basketball team ran its way to a convincing
road win over Berkshire League preseason-favorite Wamogo, 52-31, on Saturday
afternoon. The Spartans (2-0) trailed 11-9 early in the first quarter of its
early season showdown with the Warriors. Then, within a three-minute span, the
Spartans' swarming defense ignited their fast break offense. An 11-0 run to
end the quarter gave Mills a double-digit lead that it would not relinguish.
"We wanted to make it a full-court game for 32 minutes," Mills coach
Dennis Fowler said. "We took a couple of minutes to get started, but our
bench, specifically Stef Schur, gave us a big spark today." Senior Rachel
Considine was also a spark, coming off the bench to score all 11 of her points
in the first half and helping Mills to a 33-17 edge at the break. Junior Katie
Van Gilst scored a game-high 13 points, including 3 three-pointers, and Sami
Pelletier also had 11 for the Spartans. But Fowler credited the defensive aggressiveness
of guards Schur, Alexis Veith, Jackie Hernandez, Lauren Bisson and Kaitlin Niedmann
as the key to the victory. "We had to switch presses early, and my guards
did a great job adjusting," Fowler said. "We were able to put solid
pressure on their ball handlers all game. They could never really get into their
offensive sets."
Jen Sadowsky scored 10 points to lead Wamogo, who fell to 0-2 on the season.

11/28 Lewis Mills Girls Basketball Preview
Head Coach - Dennis Fowler (4th year, 55-16 career record)
2006 Record - 16-4 conference (Berkshire League 3rd Place), 17-6 overall
(Class M 1st round)
Key Losses/ Major Injury - sr. forward Rachel Considine (First Team All-Berkshire
League) tendon injury in her wrist; out indefinetly
Key Returners - sr. center Aubrey Hoyt (First Team All-Berkshire League),
sr. forward Sami Pelletier (Second Team All-Berkshire League), sr. point guard
Alexis Veith, sr. guard Stefanie Schur, jr. guard Katie Van Gilst (36 three-pointers),
jr. guard Kaitlin Niedmann, sr. guard Jackie Hernandez
Key Newcomers - jr. guard Lauren Bisson, jr. forward Kaitlin Grieco,
jr. center Patty Clark, so. center Megan Reynolds
Team Outlook - The Lady Spartans have a wealth of experience returning,
which should help them finish near the top of the league.
But they could be much weaker if Considine cannot make it back from a wrist
injury that occured during volleyball season. Considine, who was one of the
BL's best all-around players as a junior, has had limited participation during
preseason.
If Considine cannot return, more will be expected out of the senior trio of
Hoyt, Pelletier, and Veith.
Hoyt, who was also a top-ranked BL player as a junior, excels in transistion
and is a key component in the team's pressure defensive sets. Pelletier is off
to a great start. According to Fowler, she has been the team's best player so
far, doing a little bit of "everything" to help the team. Veith is
one of the league's premier athletes and on-the-ball defenders. She creates
havoc for opposing guards and fuels the fastbreak offense.
Fowler is counting on strong depth at the guard postions, where Schur, Van Gilst,
Niedmann and Hernandez all have varsity experience.
Conference Outlook - Shepaug, which beat Mills three times last season,
is the heavy favorite. They return all key players, including the BL's most
dominant player, All-State center Sam Steinmetz.
"Shepaug is talented and well-coached," Fowler said.
"It will take a your very best game to beat them."
Wamogo is another contender. The Warriors defeated the Shepaug two out of three
times last season and won the BL Tournament Title. Housatonic and Northwest
should also be near the top. Thomaston could be a darhorse.
"There is pretty good league depth this year. I think we'll see a lot of
close games," Fowler said.
