('08) Game-Winner Sends Field Hockey Squad Past No. 10 Stonehill, 3-2
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) scored
the game-winning goal off a penalty corner at the end of the regulation, sending
the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2
win over No. 10 nationally ranked Stonehill on Wednesday night.
The Owls are now 2-3, 2-1 in Northeast-10 play on the year. Stonehill is 0-4,
0-3 in league play. SCSU made good on its only shot of the first half, as Winterbottom
came free on a partial breakaway and snuck a shot through the legs of the Stonehill
goalie just 12:26 into the game. Winterbottom’s goal was the only scoring
of the first half.
The Owls then extended their lead to 2-0 just under 12 minutes into the second
half. Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) found the back of the net off a feed
from Kelly Anne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.). However, Stonehill responded with
a goal just 1:34 later to climb within 2-1. The Skyhawks evened the score with
just 3:02 remaining in regulation.
The Owls put on a flurry in the closing seconds of regulation, and it paid off
when they were awarded a penalty corner. Stonehill then committed two fouls
that resulted in additional penalty corner chances for the Owls, and they cashed
in on the third try. Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) pushed the ball out to Molly
Daniels (Canton, Conn.), who sent the ball towards the goal, where Winterbottom
knocked it home. Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) finished with five saves in
goal for the Owls.
