Problem Solving Page

Back To Mathematics Homepage

These sites all offer problem-solving resources.  I put Thinking Blocks at the top because it is my favorite, but I think they are all good.

Thinking Blocks
This is my favorite web site. I love how it trains your brain to take a word problem and create a diagram to help you know what math you need to do to solve the problem. They have recently updated the website so now it has smaller numbers so younger students can use it and they have added a fraction section. Many teachers use the Independent Practice section of the older version as a way to assess a student’s ability to solve problems. To get to the older section, open the link and scroll down.

Word Problems at the Math Playground
These are the other word problem links besides Thinking Blocks that are available through the Math Playground site. There are word problems for students in grades 2 to 8.

Aunty Math
Aunty Math (short for Aunt Mathilda) is a collection of stories with a math problem imbedded in them.  They are especially good for the early elementary grades.

NRICH Math
There are loads of mathematical activities on the NRICH website. This page contains the monthly problems.  You can navigate to different difficulty levels by using the links in the menu bar.

Math Olympiad Problem of the Month
Problems brought to you by the same people that host the Math Olympiad contests each year.  These problems stress math vocabulary and are good for upper elementary school students.

Aims Puzzle Corner
The AIMS Puzzle Corner provides over 100 interesting puzzles that can help students learn to enjoy puzzles and the mathematics behind them. The puzzles are categorized by type, and within each category are listed in order of increasing difficulty. The puzzles have not been assigned a grade level appropriateness because we have discovered that the ability to do a puzzle varies by individual not grade level.

Brain Food!
Give your mind a work out on our devious collection of puzzles. There are hundreds, ranging from word games to logic problems to riddles. Some are tricky. Some require innovation. All require thinking power.
