Computation Practice Page

Back To Mathematics Homepage

These sites were all selected because they may be helpful if you want to practice your computation skills: basic facts, multi-digit problems and word problems.  At the bottom is a few sites with ideas on improving your test taking skills.

Xtra Math
This is a free site that students can set up accounts that let them track their progress with mastering the basic facts (number combinations).
Unfortunately, the videos do not play at school, but the other sections of the web site do work at school and students can access them from home or any computer with an internet connection.

Timed Flash Cards
Practice your basic facts with these timed flash cards sorted by operation and numbers.

Terrific Triangles
Flash cards that take advantage of the relationships of fact families.

Numbers at Maths is Fun
This site provides information on how to add, subtract, multiply and divide presented in colorful and interactive ways.
It also includes tips for how to learn the basic facts as well as figure out and record the answers to multi-digit problems.
It also goes beyond whole numbers with information about working with fractions, decimals and percents.
Highly Suggested by The BFG!

  • Math Trainers – Give yourself a fact workout with Math Trainers. It is suggested you do 3 five minute workouts each day.
    This is a link to the addition trainer, but you can navigate to other trainers using the drop down menu on the left.

Computation Activities from the Math Playground
Need to practice your multiplication facts? Want to exercise your brain with mental math? Then this is the place for you! The practice sets on this page are untimed so you can focus on getting the right answer rather than beating the clock.

Kahn Academic Practice
A world of exercises, with help along the way
Practice math at your own pace  with our adaptive assessment exercises. You can start at 1+1 and work your way into calculus or jump right into whatever topic needs some brushing up.
 Each problem is randomly generated, so you never run out of practice material. If you need a hint, every single problem can be broken down, step-by-step, with one click. If you need more help, you can always watch a related video.

IXL Math Practice
IXL is an Internet based resource that can be used at school or home. It is also organized by grade level, but students can move up or down depending on their needs. In order to get reports you would need to purchase a subscription, but students and teachers can use the site for free.

Ten Marks
This is another practice site that is similar to the IXL site. However, this site offers hints and video lessons that may help students still learning a skill or concept and are not just practicing. This link brings you to the sign up page, but if you want to investigate the site further, use the tabs at the top of the screen.

Calculation Nation
Calculation Nation™ uses the power of the Web to let students challenge opponents from anywhere in the world. At the same time, students are able to challenge themselves by investigating significant mathematical content and practicing fundamental skills. The element of competition adds an extra layer of excitement.
The games of Calculation Nation™ are organized around content from the upper elementary and middle grades math curriculum. By becoming a citizen of Calculation Nation™, your child or student will play online math strategy games that allow them to learn about fractions, factors, multiples, symmetry and more, as well as practice important skills like basic multiplication and calculating area — all while having fun.
Note: You can register for free or play as a guest.

Math Fact Cafe
Print out worksheets to practice basic facts and word problems as well as time and money.

Kid Zone
This is another site where you can print out worksheets.  They are organized by grade and themes.  This site is especially good if you want word problems based on a certain theme or holiday.  I have linked to the math portion of the site, but if you scroll down you can also find resources for other content areas.

Improve Your Test Taking Skills

Be a Better Test Taker Through Problem Solving
This link gives short tutorials about how you can be a better test taker by using problem solving strategies.  When the link opens, click on the circle with your grade level in it.  The Test Prep section is a series of multiple choice questions aligned with a Houghton Mifflin textbook.  It does not correspond to the texts we are using but the concepts are similar.

Open-Ended Math Problems GET READY, GET SET...
This site is for the specific purpose of preparing Middle School students for OPEN-ENDED problem solving on standardized tests. We have divided each month into the five strands from the Philadelphia math standards:
    * Number Theory
    * Measurement
    * Geometry
    * Patterns, Algebra, and Functions
    * Data, Statistics, and Probability
There are three levels of difficulty for each standard.
It is our hope that if these are done on a consistent, weekly basis, the students will feel more confident and comfortable at test time.
To better prepare for the tests, students should answer with a picture, diagram, or paragraph explaining the solution and how they determined their answers.
