The Lewis S. Mills Weather Center is run by one student and an Environmental Earth Science Teacher. The creator and founder of this unique program is Michael Michaud, a Senior who was given the title “Chief Meteorologist” when he began writing daily weather forecasts as a sophmore. Over the last 2 years, he has earned Independent Study credit for the forecasts, for working with the LSM Weather Station data, and for other research projects. Michael writes up a report and gives it to LSM Principal, Ms. Niehoff, who then reads it over the morning announcements. Along with providing daily forecasts, he unofficially calculates the percent chance of “no school,” “90-min delays,” and “early dismissals” in the winter. Mrs. Schwartz, the Superintendent, uses Michael’s weather reports and considers his snow call percentages when she makes her decision on whether or not school should have any cancellation. According to teachers and students, he is either “dead accurate” or “dead wrong,” depending on whom you ask. On the days preceding snow storms, Michael can’t walk down the hall without some one asking if we will have school or not.
