Students are required to read and take notes on one book from the list below.  The notes will be used as part of an assessment of the reading to be given during the first week of school.

*A Stone in My Hand Clinton

  Malaak and her family are touched by the violence in Gaza between Jews and Palestinians when first her father disappears and

  All But My Life – Klein

  The author tells of the three years she endured as a slave laborer of the Nazis during World War II.

*Al-Qaeda: In Search of the Terror Network That Threatens the World – Corbin

  Traces the history of the terrorist group Al Qaeda, discussing their roots in the jihad against the Soviets in Afghanistan , their

  reasons for hating the United States , the impact their terrorist attacks have had on the world, and their beliefs and values.

*Daniel Half Human and the Good Nazi – Chotjewitz

  In 1933, best friends Daniel and Armin admire Hitler, but as anti-Semitism buoys Hitler to power, Daniel learns he is half Jewish,  

  threatening the friendship even as life in their beloved Hamburg , Germany , is becoming nightmarish. Details of Daniel and

  Armin's reunion in 1945 is interspersed in chapters.

*The Invisible Thread – Uchida

  Children’s author Uchida, who grew up in California , describes as a second-generation Japanese American, describes her

  childhood and her family’s interment in a Nevada concentration camp during World War II.

 The Moon Is Down – Steinbeck

  Chronicles the uncontrollable, unalterable chain of events that is released by an act of brutality. In a masterful tale of the effects

  of invasion on both conqueror and conquered, John Steinbeck delves into the motivations and emotions of a German

  commander who is "only following orders", and paints a devastatingly accurate portrait of a Norwegian traitor.

*My Forbidden Face:  Growing Up Under the Taliban:  A Young Woman’s Story – Latifa

  The author, who was sixteen in 1996 when the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan , tells about her family's experiences under

  the repressive regime, focusing on the lives of women and girls who were abruptly denied the freedom to work, go to school, or

  even leave their homes without a male escort.

*Nicholas and Alexandra – Massie

  Biography of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra, the last of the Romanovs to rule Russia , describing their life together and

  the fall of Imperial Russia which cost them their lives

*Timeline – Crichton

  A group of scientists, having learned how to travel through time, enter 14th century France and threaten the history of the world.

*Veiled Courage:  Inside the Afghan Women’s Resistance – Benard

  Explains how the members of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan denied the forces of the Taliban and

  helped Afghanistan women escape the terror of the Taliban's rule

*Zlata’s Diary:  A Child’s Life in Sarajevo – Filipovic

  The diary of a 13-year-old girl living in Sarajevo , begun just before her 11th birthday when there was still peace in her Homeland

*Zoya’s Story – Zoya with John Follain and Rita Cristofari

  A young Afghani woman who grew up during the wars of the 1980s and 1990s and rise of the Taliban describes the terror she

  has witnessed in her homeland and the work she has done to change women’s fates through the Revolutionary Association

  of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)
