 Basic guidelines/tips for scholarship interviews

(provided by a local scholarship committee)

·         Learn to sell yourself to others.  It will be necessary for the job market.  After all, you are trying to gain a scholarship.

·         Dress appropriately.  Appearance unfortunately does matter and can influence the interviewer.  Often times, one gets the impression that the carefully dressed student takes the experience of the interview and the desire for the scholarship more seriously.

·         Maintain good eye contact.

·         Body language.  Be alert, don’t slouch.

·         Greet the interviewers with a smile and a firm handshake if one is offered.

·         Thank the interviewers for their time and consideration as you leave.

·         Be honest and sincere.  The interviewer often times can smell the bologna.

·         Don’t worry; there are often no right answers to many of the questions.

·         If you are asked about something on your resume/transcript/essay, be prepared to explain or to describe what you did.

·         If asked about what you have read recently, be prepared for a second question.  If you haven’t read a book for pleasure recently, say so.  It’s o.k.

·         Your name and social security number should appear in the top right corner of each page of the application, unless otherwise noted.

·         Sign your essay.  Type your full name underneath your signature.

·         Always abide by due dates!  You may not be considered for the scholarship if you are late!

·         Be neat!  Always type or neatly print in black ink the information requested.  Do not use pencil and notebook paper!

·         Complete all sections – leave no blanks!  If a question does not apply to you, write “N/A” (Not Applicable), so the scholarship committee knows you have not ignored the question.

THE LEWIS S. MILLS GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT ASKS THAT YOU:

·        Adhere to the posted deadlines for ALL scholarships.

·        Read through the application form before filling it out, so that you are clear on what is being asked for.

·        Keep a copy of your Senior Resume and all recommendations on file in the Guidance Office.

·        NEVER send your original essay or FAFSA form to schools or scholarship organizations!!  ALWAYS keep several copies – you’ll need them again and again!!
