Resume Writing Guide

Purpose of Your Resume

·     To provide additional information about yourself to a college/employer above and beyond the academic information that appears on your transcript

·     To showcase special talents, interests, experiences that make you stand out from other applicants

General Guidelines for Resume Writing

 

·     Although there is no set format, your resume should be clear, concise, and easy to scan (see attached samples)

·     Be sure to check grammar and spelling

·     If you don’t have enough information to fill the page, expand upon each item (example: describe the responsibilities associated with a job you held instead of simply stating where you worked).

Key Information to Include on a Resume

·     Name

·     Contact information (phone #, address, email)

·     Name of high school

·     Year of graduation

·     Club/activities with grade levels or years of participation

·     Athletics with grade levels or years of participation

·     Employment with grade levels or years of work

·     Community service/volunteer work with grade levels or years of participation

·     Awards

·     Other

  •       Talents/hobbies/interests
  •       Travel
  •       Intended major (if known)
  •       Special certifications (such as CPR, First Aid)
