NCAA Requirements

Student athletes should be aware of their responsibilities if they intend to participate in intercollegiate sports on the college level.  The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Clearinghouse’s function is to evaluate transcripts of potential college athletes in terms of academic requirements.  These requirements are as follows:

  • Graduate from high school
  • Complete required number of core courses and earn a minimum required GPA in your core courses (refer to chart below)
  • For Division I, earn a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your core course GPA and test score sliding scale (see www.ncaaclearinghouse.net)
  • For Division II, earn a sum of scores of at least 68 on the ACT or a combined score of at least 820 on the SAT on a national test date and a 2.0 average or better in your core courses.  There is no sliding scale for Division II.

NOTE:  Computer science courses can only be used as core courses if your high school grants graduation credit in Math or Natural or Physical Science for them, and if the courses appear on your high school’s core course list as a math or science course.

**Please be sure to check the LSM approved list of course courses on www.ncaaclearinghouse.net to be sure that you are taking the courses you need (Responding to Children’s Lit., Print and Broadcast II do NOT count as English courses for the NCAA!)

Early in the senior year, athletes are expected to fill out the “Student Release Form”, which is available at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.  After registering give the proper form to your counselor who will send out your transcript. ($30.00 fee)

Division I and II schools can request eligibility information about prospective student athletes from the Clearinghouse for purposes of initial recruitment.
