COURSE EXPECTATIONS FOR SOCIOLOGY
Teacher: Mr. Olander
Course: Sociology, a one semester course, is designed as an introductory college prep class. Units of study include: The Science of Sociology, Cultural Universals and Diversity, and The Individual in Society. A variety of teaching strategies are used with a project in each unit.
Text: Sociology and You by Shepard and Greene
Grading: Homework counts for 20% of the points available for each quarter and quizzes, essays, tests, and projects are 80% of your quarter grade. Your final is worth 10% of your overall grade.
Projects: There will be an eight to ten page research project. This project will include observation, data collection and statistical measurement using the scientific method. You will design this research project yourself and present your findings to the class and guests.
Writing Samples: There will be six to eight writing prompts, which will each be at least two pages in length and typed. Topics include subcultures, social norms, gender roles, history of sociology, and theoretical perspective.
Homework: Homework is given on a regular basis and emphasizes a preliminary understanding of new material or practice with previously explored concepts. Students are expected to make arrangements for all missed work in accordance with the make up policy. Work submitted beyond the date on the make up sheet will earn a zero.
Student Responsibilities:
1. Students are expected to continue to develop good habits by preparing regularly, participating fully in class, and seeking additional help as needed.
2. Group tasks and presentations are frequently used methods as students are expected to develop cooperation and public speaking skills.
3. Grades for all assignments are based on the accuracy of the information. Points will be reduced for late work.
4. Plan to work consistently at a high level on topics that will help you understand yourself and others!
5. You will be expected to participate in sociological research in your school and community.
