History Course Description
Viet Nam Conflict Unit - 08

Dear Students & Parents:                                                    School Year 2007-08

Welcome to your junior year social studies course – U.S. History [the Modern Era]. I hope you will find the class interesting, challenging, and fun. (Remember it’s the journey that counts, not the destination).

We will be looking at our past through major themes* and trying to understand why our ancestors & government did what they did, during the past 1& ½ centuries.

(*Please read the course description for a list of the learning units).

The following are some requirements (& suggestions) for having a successful year in your social studies class.

1. You are responsible for your own education  - so be PROACTIVE.

A] Arrive to class on time. If late, you will need a properly signed pass.

B] Come prepared to class with a pen, notebook/binder, homework, &
all readings for the unit being study. [The textbook will be in the room].

C] If you were absent, please ask for the class work you have missed & turn-in the homework from the day you were out. (You are responsible for getting any missed notes from a classmate. In addition, make-up work is due within 2 school days- for every day missed).

D] Regarding ‘late work’- if a report &/or project is turned in late, it will receive a deduction of 10% from the grade each school day late. (Daily homework won’t be accepted if not completed on time, because we go over the responses on that day).

E] Keep all work until the unit test/quiz has been taken.

2. I am responsible for providing an environment that is stimulating, orderly, and respectful.

A] I will give you a Unit Assignment sheet at the beginning of each era under study.

B] I will provide opportunities to look at issues ‘with a critical eye’, research important events &/or people, listen to guest speakers, watch & listen to related audio/visual materials, and a possible field trip.

C] I will be respectful of all students and defend the rights of ‘the people’.

D] I will allow students to improve on their work*, to demonstrate ‘true learning’. (*Please see me for redoing major reports &/or projects).

E] I will grade student reports/projects within 2 schools days.

(Please review the grade policy sheet for an explanation on how your grade is determined in this class).

3. How to make the class respectful (the class policies):

A] Follow the directions of the instructor (& the student handbook).

B] If you need something (e.g., to go to the lav, get supplies) please ask.

C] Please wait to be acknowledged, when asking a ? or responding to a ?.

D] Treat others with respect and courteousness.

Accept responsibilities for your actions. A positive learning atmosphere will be promoted.

I look forward to working with each of you during this school year.
