Education: BA, History; M Ed, Social Studies: Colorado State University. MA, History, Trinity College.
Experience: Taught in Colorado eight years. At Lewis Mills since fall of 1980.
Family: wife, Karen; daughter, Megan and her husband Zhang Yong-hsi (Grant); son Ben and his wife Bethany.
Travel: Five weeks in Ghana (W. Africa) in 1994. Christmas in England, 1996. Toured in China three weeks in 2000 and one week in 2002 for daughter’s wedding.
Honors: Region 10 Teacher of the year, 2005-6. Award for excellence in Social Studies Education, Connecticut Council for the Social Studies.
Courses: Tenth Grade Global Studies Honors, AP Modern European History (alternate years), semester elective courses in Economics and Law.
Philosophy: I believe the task of the high school is to challenge students to become responsible, independent learners and productive citizens in a democratic society. Much emphasis in my courses is placed on encouraging students to act responsibly in meeting the course requirements and in allowing other students to take responsibility for their own education. A wide range of learning activities are designed to give students opportunity to develop academic skills and effective interpersonal skills.
Extracurricular Activities: The Lewis Mills Social Studies Club participates in the Hartford Model United Nations in January of each year and in a multi-day internationally attended model United Nations in March or May of each year. Mills also fields at least one team in the interscholastic mock trial competition sponsored by the Connecticut Consortium for Law and Citizenship Education.
