Timothy Mischke – Earth Science
B.S. University of Connecticut – Environmental Science
M.A. University of Bridgeport – Education
Prior to teaching I was an environmental consultant specializing in groundwater monitoring, Site Assessments and wastewater discharge permits. Presently, I am Registered Soil Scientist performing wetland delineations as needed. This is my third year as a teacher at Lewis Mills High School where I apply my environmental background to the classroom.
Below is a description/overview of my course. All pertinent information regarding your student’s performance expectations can be found here. My e-mail address is also listed and this is the BEST way to get in contact with me. Your child will be given a copy of this document on the first day of school.
Environmental Earth Science
Teacher: Mr. Mischke
In this class we will learn about the Earth and the processes and forces that change it. This course addresses the major themes of earth science. The major units covered in this class will be the atmosphere/meteorology, space (Earth’s place within), oceanography and internal and external processes.
In addition to the above units this course will stress the importance of an environmentally conscience society. The world is ever changing due to human activity. We will analyze/incorporate environmental issues whenever possible throughout this coming year.
The following are a set of essential questions that were written to highlight major areas of discussion. Each question will be addressed within the appropriate unit(s) throughout the year.
1. What is energy?
2. Why do we need the atmosphere?
3. How have oceans shaped our lives?
4. How do convection and density play a role in earth science?
5. How does an ever changing environment affect people?
Grading:
Your grade will be determined by a point system. Each semester you will be able to earn a certain amount of points. Tests will obviously be worth more than homework, but the total points given for homework throughout a marking term could be substantial, so be sure to complete all your work. Various assignments throughout the year will include the following… Tests, quizzes, labs, projects, homework and classwork. Notebook checks will take place on occasion. You will be notified how much each assignment is worth when assignments are given. Below is a general range of points for each assignment (subject to change).
Assignment Point Range
Test 85 – 200
Quiz 25 – 85
Labs 20 – 50
Projects 40 – 100
Homework 5 – 15
Classwork 10 – 30
