My Philosophy of Teaching
I like to tell students on the first day how I see our respective jobs. The student’s job is to learn chemistry. My job is to help them learn chemistry. In other words, learning is not a passive process, but requires active engagement on the student’s part. I am here to guide them through the subject, help them understand the various topics, provide perspective and show them connections to the world we live in. An important objective is to provide the education needed to help them make informed decisions in the future on issues that involve chemistry.
About the Chemistry Courses
Chemistry is unlike some other courses in that it is cumulative. In other words, things learned in early parts of the course need to be remembered and applied later in the year. Chemistry is also a laboratory course, which is an advantage because students learn best by doing things with their own hands. In the laboratory, students will be working with a variety of chemicals and apparatus that can be dangerous if used improperly. Safety is therefore an absolute priority and students will be thoroughly instructed in safe practices and emergency procedures.
