Welcome to the Lewis S. Mills High School Social Studies Department
“Education is the transmission of civilization” – Ariel & Will Durant

The department members challenge every student to develop critical thinking skills and use the examples from our past to better understand current societal issues.

Most students complete two credits of Global Studies within their first two years at Lewis S. Mills High School. During the first year all freshmen Global Studies Students complete a research project on a historical, cultural, economic, or social topic on India, China, or Japan.

In addition, all students must successfully complete courses in U.S. History and Civics/American Government to meet graduation requirements for Regional School District #10.

We provide our students an opportunity to complete Advance Placement courses in U.S. History, Psychology, and European History [the later two alternate when offered].

Furthermore, we offer our students opportunities to widen through knowledge in the social sciences by taking a semester course in Economics, Law, Psychology, or Sociology.

Our curriculums are developed from a combination of standards from the National Council of Social Studies, the social studies standards from the Connecticut State Department of Education, and collaborative work by department members.

We assess students in a variety of methods – from essays, critiques, student reflections, projects, and presentations. Our goal is to assist students through an ‘Arc of Development’ process of using graphic organizers, small-group work, simulations, and projects to become self-directed learners. Student work is displayed in classrooms and throughout the school.

We focus our lessons around Five Essential Questions:

·      How are we products of the past and how might we influence the future?

·      What are the rights and responsibilities of citizens?

·      How does economics impact people?

·      What is culture?

·      How does geography impact people?
