Essential Questions

The primary goal of the English Department is to create literate citizens who have developed life-long skills in reading for both information and enjoyment, and who have become creative, as well as effective, speakers and writers.   A balanced language arts program in which thinking, reading, listening, speaking, and viewing are integrated within a stimulating environment will best achieve these ends.

The English department believes that all students are members of a community of readers, writers, and thinkers. These learners benefit through continual interaction with text, through communication with other people, and in a climate that fosters risk-taking and growth.

  This occurs when:

  • Students are exposed to an enthusiasm for literature which encourages their growth as readers.

  • Students experience models of good reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking.

  • Students are encouraged to analyze literature and to produce their own written work.

  • Student instruction taps into multiple intelligences allowing students variety in expressing what they know and what they are able to do.

  • Students demonstrate an understanding that growth in their ability to use language is vital.
