CATE Philosophy:
Business and Finance Technology, Family and
Consumer Sciences; Technology Education are high school programs
that teach students how to think independently, solve problems, and
prepare for post-secondary goals.
Performance-based activities are stressed in
all courses and students are expected to work as team members to
solve problems and make decisions important to the outcome of their
assignments and projects.
All courses in CATE are assessed by using
authentic assessment. Authentic assessment encompasses:
Traditional, Alternative and Performance based assessment practices
that measure student achievement.
Traditional assessment uses tests, quizzes,
short answer questions, multiple choice and matching. Alternative
assessment best measures the affective domain and includes classroom
activities where students work in teams, evaluate self and peers,
and reflect on learning through databases, logs and portfolios.
Performance assessment measures the psychomotor domain and requires
a student to show competence in a particular skill or task.
Feedback of student learning is conveyed to the student through the
use of evaluation instruments: Rubrics, Checklists, written notes
and verbal observances.
It is the intent of the CATE department that
the program prepares students with courses necessary for
post-secondary educational studies. CATE courses have paved the way
for many of our students to seek Business and Finance degrees,
Engineering and Manufacturing degrees which encompass the use of
CADD, CNC, Robotics; an exploration into the Culinary Arts, Child
Care and Social Sciences certificate or degree programs. The CATE
department continually strives to enhance the skills necessary for
all students to become contributing, socially responsible productive
citizens in today’s ever changing and challenging technological
society.
