THE COMPUTER APPLICATION COURSES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ALL STUDENTS DURING THEIR HIGH SCHOOL YEARS.

Computer Concepts and Applications Level 2 Grades 9,10,11,12

Credits: .50 Half-Year

This is an introductory course designed to provide interested students with exposure to the use of computers. This course will include word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications. All students will be required to learn and use the touch method of keyboarding. Students will develop keyboarding accuracy and speed and will produce a variety of documents. Students will learn the terminology used in a technological environment, develop good work habits and organizational skills, and acquire the ability to follow directions and to solve problems. Evaluation will consist of quizzes, tests, projects, daily production work, and a major integrated project. Students will make an oral presentation to assist in the development of public speaking skills.

Advanced Computer Applications Level 2 Grades 9,10,11,12

Credits: .50 Half Year

Prerequisite: Computer Concepts and Applications with a C or better, or permission of instructor

This course is designed to develop and refine the student's word processing skills. Students will learn advanced word processing functions while learning to create a variety of documents. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to, parallel and newspaper columns, switching, merging and sorting, tables, and the use of graphics. Templates, wizards, and auto formats will be used in the completion of some documents. The digital still camera, full-page scanner, and color printer will be utilized to enhance the use of graphics. Speed and accuracy development techniques will be used. Students will develop knowledge of a publishing program through a small business project. Students will make an oral presentation to assist in the development of public speaking skills.

Accounting I Level 2 Grades 10,11,12

Credits: 1.00 Full Year

Accounting I is designed to provide students with a knowledge of business organization and accounting theory, concepts, and procedures. Students will acquire knowledge of journalizing and posting of transactions, worksheets, financial statements and other concepts and procedures essential to the accounting. Microsoft Excel and Quickbooks will be introduced early in the course using spreadsheet applications. Evaluation will consist of quizzes, tests, simulated accounting projects, homework and class work. Accounting I may be considered as a math credit.

Financial Accounting II Level 1 Grades 11,12

Credits: 1.00 Full Year

Prerequisite: Accounting I (recommendation: grade of C and permission of instructor)

Accounting II is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of business and accounting procedures and to acquire a foundation for the future study of accounting and related business subjects. The course includes review of Accounting I materials, advanced accounting theory, and advanced analysis of financial reports. There will be a strong emphasis on accounting related to partnerships and corporations. Students will be required to complete advanced automated accounting and spreadsheet applications. Evaluation will consist of quizzes, tests, simulated accounting projects, homework and class work.

Business Organization & Management Level 1 Grades 11,12

Credits: 1.00 Full Year

Comprehensive Business Technology (CBT) is a rigorous, fast-paced, comprehensive course designed to introduce students to areas critical to their understanding of the modern business environment in today's economy. Among the topics covered are: business management and administration, the legal environment of business, financial investing, personal finances, a stock market portfolio, an employment portfolio, a corporate research project, applied communications, computerized accounting, word processing and spread-sheet applications, and readings from publications such as The Hartford Courant, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and Business Week. Students will participate in The Stock Market Game and be required to do a major project each marking term. Evaluation will consist of homework, class work, quizzes, and tests. Marking term requirements will also include newspaper and magazine summaries, the stock portfolio, a corporate research project, and an employment portfolio.

Career Readiness Level 2 Grades 11,12

Credits: .50 Half-Year

This course is designed to prepare students for their ultimate entry into successful employment. Topics to be covered include job acquisition skills (interviewing, resume/cover letter writing, etc.), employer/employee relationships (problem solving/communication skills), career awareness (future jobs/careers, making meaningful and productive career decisions). Following this course, a work component is offered as an additional elective. This component is also worth .50 credit. The student must attain a grade of C or better in Career Readiness to be eligible for the work component. Students will leave for their work experience as determined by the work experience coordinator.

Work Experience Course Level 2 Grades 11,12

Credits: .50 Half-Year

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Career Readiness

This course will prepare students for their entry into successful employment. The selection of the occupation will pertain to the student’s interest inventory/choice of career pathway. Students will be utilizing valuable job skills, while also improving their communication skills. Students are required to pass Career Readiness with at least a C average. An employer and the work experience coordinator will evaluate the student via on-site visits and a job skill checklist. The student will successfully complete a project based learning summary. All attendance policies at Lewis Mills will apply at the worksite.

Desktop Publishing I Level 2 Gr 10, 11, 12

Credits .50 Fall Semester

Desktop Publishing uses Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, CS2 software to produce high-quality print media documents that combines text and graphics. A wide range of publications - brochures, magazine layouts, catalogs, newsletters, flyers, and forms - will be created. Marketing and promotional strategies will influence the design and layout process of various publications. Evaluation will consist of theory quizzes, simulated projects and a final comprehensive project. Students who are interested in workng on the school's yearbook will learn the skills necessary to produce the yearbook.

Desktop Publishing II Level 2 Gr 10, 11, 12

Credits .50

Enhancement of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign CS2 publications will be created in Desktop Publishing II. Advanced stule and techniques will be utilized throughout the layout and design process. The cost effective approach when creating commercially printed publications will be discussed using spot color and process color printing. Electronic versions of publications know as PDF (Portable Document Format) and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) files will be created using a master template. Evaluation will consist of theory quizzes, simulated projects and a final comprehensive project.
