Language Arts Team

The Region #10 Elementary Language Arts program is based upon the belief that the ability to read and write emerges through extensive involvement in language rich experiences. Lake Garda School’s kindergarten through grade four language arts program provides ongoing and systematic instruction designed to assist students with the acquisition of competencies in listening, viewing, reading, writing and speaking. These strands are complimentary processes underlying language development.

On April 11, 2008, Lake Garda School held its seventeenth annual Read Aloud Day.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Burlington Chamber of Commerce for their monetary donation that has graciously funded our annual Read Aloud Day for the past several years. Lake Garda School has been able to purchase beautifully illustrated hardcover books for every classroom.  Volunteers from the Chamber, along with the Region 10 community, visited Lake Garda School to read the books aloud to our students Friday, April 11, 2008.  The Read Aloud Day was a huge success!  The faculty, staff and students of Lake Garda School wish to thank the Burlington Chamber of Commerce and for the members of the community for their continued support of the Read Aloud Day program.

A Visit from the Cat in the Hat

In celebration of Dr.Seuss’s birthday, The Cat in the Hat visited Lake Garda School on Monday, March 3, 2008. ‘The Cat’ tried not to cause his usual trouble as he visited classrooms throughout the day. The Cat in the Hat just couldn’t help himself when he celebrated one of Dr. Seuss’s rhyming books, Hop on Pop. ‘The Cat’ and the kindergarteners had a wonderful time ‘hopping on pop’.

Rebekah Van De Mark works with a small group during language arts time.

The philosophy of our elementary reading program is to develop students’ lifelong desire to read. It emphasizes their ability to incorporate reading skills effectively for communication, learning, and enjoyment. Reading is the process of constructing meaning from written text. It is an interactive process requiring coordination of learned strategies and processes leading to comprehension bridged by fluency.

Lake Garda School embraces the Empowering Writers’ philosophy and approach. There is consistency across and between grade levels in regard to specific writing skills, common vocabulary, and learning outcomes. Our approach to teaching writing involves whole class instruction, teacher modeling, guided practice opportunities, as well as opportunities for sharing. In addition, we emphasize a logical scope and sequence for instruction and clear, measurable expectations.

All of the language arts involve reflective thinking. As students are engaged in the various elements of language arts, they probe, evaluate and think critically about what they have read, heard, seen or written. Lake Garda students will be able to use the acquired knowledge actively and independently to problem solve and communicate effectively and to sustain their desire to learn throughout their lives.

The Language Arts staff include the following:

Joanne Ellsworth (PreK-2) and (3-4) serve as language arts consultants to the staff and students.

Rebekah Van De Mark, early intervention specialist, services students in grades one and two through STAIRS (Strategic, Active, and Independent Readers) and the Jump Start program with the help of  two experienced teaching assistants.

Mrs. Van De Mark is also part of our Literacy Support Team. She services at-risk students in first and second grade within the classroom setting.
