Homework Information

Homework will be given out on Mondays and will be due back to school on Fridays.  If it is completed before Friday, you may send it in at any time.  Please return it in the “School” pocket of the take-home folder.  The majority of homework time in first grade should be spent on independent or shared reading.  However, each week math and handwriting assignments will also be given.  Please anticipate seeing the following assignments each week:

  1. Nightly Reading Log:  Region 10’s homework policy states that students should read, or be read to, a minimum of twenty minutes nightly.  Each night after reading, please record the title, author, and number of minutes read on the weekly reading log to be returned on Friday.  At the beginning, you may assist your child by recording this information for him/her.  By mid-year, please have your child begin recording this information on his/her own.  You may read any books from home or the library.  Please have your child practice retelling the story after reading as well.  Retelling is an important piece of comprehension.
  2. Handwriting/Word Wall Words:  Students will be assigned either handwriting OR a word wall assignment each week.  Please reinforce proper letter formation by referencing the Zaner-Bloser handwriting alphabet poster that was sent home last week.  Encourage your child to take his/her time and think about the strokes as he/she writes.  The handwriting pages that will be sent home are a review of a letter that has already been introduced and taught in class.  Occasionally, I will send home a list of word wall words (i.e. sight words) and some activities to practice them in lieu of the handwriting assignment.
  3. Math:  I will send one math page home each week to coincide with concepts we will learn in school.  Some math sheets may be doubled-sided.  Assignments will vary.

Please remember that while first graders will need some guidance/direction to complete homework assignments, the homework should be their own work.   Thank you so much for supporting your child in his/her efforts to complete these assignments.    J    Ms. Cragin
