COMPREHENSION STRATEGIESAs you already know, each month first graders focus on a different comprehension strategy to improve their understanding of a story and it’s characters. Our strategy for March was characterization. As we read and listened to a story, we tried to get to know the characters better. We thought about how the character looked, how he/she acted, what he/she said, what he/she did in the story, and how he/she changed. Shown below are examples of our work, including character puzzles we worked very hard on! |

Our strategy for the month of April is Comparing and Contrasting. We have compared and contrasted two characters from the same book. We have also compared and contrasted two different versions of the same story. Shown below are samples of the “Character Comparison Sunglasses” that we used for comparing Frog and Toad and The Tortoise and The Hare. Please remember the importance of talking to your child about the books he/she reads to you every night. |
