Fourth Grade Information page
Science-
In fourth
grade at Harwinton Consolidated School the science units that are available for
students to explore include:
1)
Animal Studies – Students get
first hand experience with live Fiddler Crabs, Millipedes, and African Dwarf
Frogs.
2)
Electricity – Students learn
concepts in electricity such as insulators and conductors and they get to make
circuits and switches.
3)
Sound – The principles of
sound are explored through the creation of several models and instruments.
Math-
Students
in fourth grade at Harwinton Consolidated School are actively engaged in
problem solving reasoning and communicating mathematically. Topics include:

also required that each student master their addition, subtraction
multiplication facts. Daily
practice is necessary to memorize these facts.

Writing-
Students spend their
year building on their narrative writing skills and learning to write
expository essays. They will write
five-paragraph essays in response to prompts that show evidence of
organization, support and elaboration, and fluency. Students will also apply editing skills such as spelling,
sentence structure, and punctuation to their writing.
Reading-
Students will read novels, short stories, and non-fiction texts. They will respond orally and in writing to comprehension questions. A focus of instruction in fourth grade is building vocabulary through a wide variety of activities. Students will be introduced to 150 new words throughout the year.
Social
Studies-
Fourth Grade students at H.C.S. study Connecticut History and regions of the U.S. Later in the year they will be completing a report on an important person from Connecticut.
