Students are discovering that much exists beyond the scope of the human eye! Through the use of nonstandard scientific tools including a drop of water on wax paper to hand lens to microscopes with three powerful lenses a whole new world has been discovered! Students have explored close-up views of objects such as feathers, pencil shavings, and yarn. In addition they have become detectives to identify four substances that appear similar to the eye, but by examining their crystals with microscopes are miles apart in appearance! Furthermore, students were interested to see that what appears to be nothing but a clear liquid contains microscopic species including volvox, vinegar eels, and blepharisma! Mrs. Lecko’s fifth grade students are finding that magnification opens up a whole new world!
