Grade 6

In sixth grade Unified Arts, students take a sewing- crafts course. The focus of instruction is on the step-by-step process involved in a hands-on approach to learning. This process involves the multiple techniques required to achieve the culminating project of a machine stitched pillow. The history of clothing, equipment, pattern terminology, and construction methods are examined and used during the six week course.

Grade 8

Grade Eight Unified Arts students examine components of Family Life Education. The changes and choices faced by adolescents as they grow are addressed. The course covers the human life cycle, self concepts and interpersonal relationships, self control and abstinence, prevention of pregnancy, parenting, sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and sexual abuse and harassment. Students learn valuable communication skills to increase their ability to make healthy personal decisions throughout the lifespan.

Grade 7

FACS students participate in an interactive FOODS course. Students learn to correctly identify utensils, units of measurement, techniques for preparing food, common food preparation terms, and how to follow a recipe. In addition, students incorporate healthier food choices to plan and prepare a specific meal. Meal planning, food presentation, good manners, and the effects of a pleasant mealtime atmosphere are also studied.
