Course Title: Skills and Strategies for Reading                    Instructor:  Maria Grappone   

Grades: 6,7,8                                                                              (Emerald, Sapphire, Silver)

Academic Year 2007-2008,

Program meets two times in an eight  day rotation in sixth, seventh and eighth grade.  The program provides intensive instruction in reading/writing strategies and study skills to help in the content area classrooms.

Student Expectations (Outcomes/essential learning concepts and skills):

 

  • Students will maintain an organized notebook to facilitate class preparation and increase academic performance.
  • Students will demonstrate individual levels of competence in reading expository

nonfiction material, cloze reading, skimming and scanning, editing and revising, selective highlighting, writing,  note taking using auditory and visual resources, study group participation, utilization of memory development strategies, test taking techniques, application of the research process, and technology literacy skills.

 

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to integrate reading skills and study habits/ skills into their content area assignments and interdisciplinary activities.
  • Students will increase their level of academic self-competence.

 

Standard for Assessment (How grades are determined):

This course is a pass/fail course.  Grades are determined by demonstrating consistent effort/participation, positive attitude/behavior, and application of reading/study skills to earn a passing grade (P).  Failure of a student to demonstrate growth and application of reading and study skills earns a failing grade (F).
