Welcome To
United States History
Mr. Matthew L.
Weeks
What is studied in 8th
Grade U.S. History?
Students
study United States History from the Age of Exploration up to the end of the
Civil War in 1865.
The textbook is The American Nation
My objectives with
students this year are as follows.
1. working with students on developing personal responsibility which is crucial for success in high
school
2. helping students understand that what they think is important
when learning
What are the
student’s homework expectations?
1. Students can expect homework at least four times a week.
2. Homework is due in class on time and should be completed to the
best of the student’s ability.
3. Students should study every night for ten minutes to make
preparation for quizzes easier.
Each day, students
begin class by writing their homework assignment in their planner. The planner
is provided by the school at the start of the year. Homework assignments are
handed out and discussed. All questions are answered. Homework assignments are
also updated daily on the Purple Team Homework Hotline (673-6163 ext. 7226). My
goal is to make homework expectations clear to students so they can better meet
their responsibilities and be successful.
Are there ever
surprise quizzes?
NEVER!
Students will know three or four days in advance of a quiz. This will
give them adequate time to prepare and be successful. Study guides are provided
to help them better focus their studies.
Again, my goal is to make expectations clear to
students so they can be successful.
What forms of
assessments are used so students can demonstrate learning besides quizzes?
*
Power Point Presentations
*Type
I and III Writing
*
Discussion and
Debate
*

*
Projects Requiring Artistic Creativity
What field
trips are planned for this year?
A
fall field trip planned to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum. In the spring, a
field trip to a historical play is possible. This trip will depend on what is
being offered this year.
