Region 10 administrators have received the results of the spring Connecticut Academic Performance Tests (CAPT) and are happy with the performance of their current Juniors. “We always judge ourselves by the percentage of students achieving goal and proficiency in each of the four subject tests,” said high school principal, Karissa Niehoff. “This year our students showed stronger performance in each of these areas.” The percent of students achieving proficiency was strong in relation to both the entire state and to similar towns within the state. Proficiency is the standard that is used to determine Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation. This year, 95% of the sophomores achieved proficiency in Reading, 94.5% in Writing, 92.5% in Mathematics and 95% in Science. “We are very pleased with the increases this year, particularly in Science and Reading,” stated Assistant Superintendent, Michael Landry. “Last year, both of these areas had a proficiency level below 60%. We made efforts to reinforce the needed skills in all areas, with special emphasis on Reading skills in all subject areas. This seems to have made a difference based on our score improvement.” The goal score is a higher standard determined by the state to challenge schools to perform at a high level. The Burlington and Harwinton sophomores last spring attained goal at a higher level than in the previous Generation 3 CAPT testing. The percent of students achieving goal in Reading was 74.4%, Writing was 73.9%, Mathematics 62.3% and Science 67.3%. Student CAPT results are reported in 5 levels from ranging from Below Basic to Advanced. In the spring testing, Region 10 sophomores were well represented in the Advanced level with 39.5% in reading, 30.5% in writing, 32% in Mathematics and 40% in science achieving this standard. “This is a very difficult test,” added Superintendent of Schools, Paula Schwartz. “The State of Connecticut designed it with rigor in mind. It challenges our students and staff to keep our focus on instruction for all students at high levels. We are very pleased to see that our performance continues to improve.”
