Building Project

Did you know…

·        The high school was opened in 1962 and had renovations in 1963, 1988, and 1995.

·        High school requirements have expanded:  3-year science, 1/2-year civics, more students take world languages

·        The 6th grade moved to the middle school in 1991.

·        The high school marching band and color guard have 200 students this year.

·        The percent of increase in graduates from 1994 to 2003 was 91% with the number of graduates at LSM in 2003 at 185 students.  The graduating class of 1994 had 96 students.

·        The 6th grade population in 2003-4 is 250 students.

·        The current population of Lake Garda School for 2003-4 is 739 students without moving the 5th graders.

·        The current population of Harwinton Consolidated for 2003-4 is 566 without moving the 5th graders.

·        The new BOE proposal that addresses the population growth will cost taxpayers $22.4 million at a projected average annual cost to taxpayers for a house valued at $250,000 in Burlington of $287 and in Harwinton of $275. (subject to prevailing interest rates, grand list, population growth)

·        State reimbursement of 55.4% of reimbursable items only applies to this project.  No other plans are on file with the state.  Any new proposal will have to pass referendum first, before the state will determine reimbursement rate.

·        New state legislation on Indoor Air Quality and Fire Code as of 7/20/03 have already changed the scope of this building project.

·        The building project will take 30 months to complete, with some sections being opened earlier. Projected completion date: September 2006.

·        The 5th graders will be kept in 12 self-contained classes at Har-Bur Middle School and share an entrance with the 6th graders.

·        Two large rooms of the twelve room addition at Har-Bur will be devoted to science.

·        The middle school will gain a new media center and the high school will have both current floors devoted to a high school media center/computer center.

·        The middle school will gain a new gym and outdoor play area expressly for use by 5th and 6th graders.

·        The high school will add two science classroom/labs and return a temporary science room to a regular classroom.

·        The flex space will have 8 rooms (4 on each floor) for use by either middle or high school with locking doors to the wing not using the rooms.

·        The new auditorium will seat 700 students and be available for community use.  New adjacent high school music space will house chorus, theater and band rooms.  The present auditorium seats 380.

·        The current middle/high school music space will be given over to the middle school.

·        The current high school art space consists of two rooms with access to the second room only through the first.  The new plan adds an art room to both middle and high school.

·        The LSM gym will receive a new floor, lighting and refurbishment of seats and increased space for a weight room and trainer’s room.

·        The present LSM kitchen prepares food for middle school and it is carted over to the middle school each day.

·        The new kitchen will serve both buildings with separate serving areas.  The cafeterias of both buildings will be enlarged.

·        There will be two large public bathrooms for use by auditorium and gym audiences.
